Fear of the Dentist

Being afraid of dental treatment or ‘The Dentist’ is more common than a lot of us realise, it’s just that most people don’t like to talk about it.

Perhaps you have a fear of needles or injections and so are anxious about dental treatment as well. Or maybe you’ve experienced painful treatment in the past. Also known as Dental Phobia, a fear of the dentist sometimes begins as a result of a bad or unpleasant experience during a dental appointment and it can be quite common for people to feel trapped and not in control in the dentist’s chair, especially if they can’t see what’s happening.

Which therapy?

Fear of the dentist or fear of dental treatment often begins either as a result of a negative past experience, hearing about other people’s past experiences or it can develop from anxiety about the unknown. However the fear developed, it is a response that has been learned, so the good news is that it can be unlearned.

Many people find hypnotherapy very helpful for fear of the dentist and dental phobia because in hypnotherapy, a variety of techniques can be used to work with the subconscious mind, to uncover the source of the fear and develop a new, calmer way of responding and leave the fear in the past.
